The Raffia Connection is an online store, production area and workshop space for crafters and artisans with a passion for natural, durable, and hard-to-find plant-based fibres.
If you enjoy weaving, basketry, crochet, macramé or are looking for unique fibres for floristry or other craft projects, The Raffia Connection provides a range of products that is constantly being updated with new products, colours and ideas.
As well as our signature hand-dyed raffia collection, you’ll find imported raffia, paper raffia, hemp and linen threads and jute strings from around the world.
Our ethically sourced natural raffia is hand-dyed in Melbourne in soft colours inspired by the Australian landscape. It’s premium floristry grade, obtained from sustainably grown Madagascan palm trees – a plant that has the longest leaves in the world.
G’day, I’m Janet Troy.
I founded The Raffia Connection after struggling to source good quality raffia to make baskets of my own. I didn’t originally set out to create a business - but I knew it was difficult to get hold of quality raffia in a great range of colours.
I’ve always enjoyed art and craft since I was a kid and have made a career of creating and teaching - first as a graphic designer, and later as a primary school art teacher.
The Raffia Connection started in 2018, and it’s now a full-time business with a dedicated team hand-dyeing our signature raffia and fulfilling orders that are shipped worldwide.
Working with raffia combines the tactile experience of a plant-based fibre with endless possibilities for beautiful utilitarian and sculptural items. It’s a constant source of pleasure to see the way the light catches the forms, colours and textures of raffia.
We love seeing the beautiful crafts made by our customers, showcasing the colours of the Australian landscape. Don’t forget to share photos of your creations and stay in the loop on Instagram and Facebook
